What Is IPTV and How Does It Work?

IPTV stands for Internet Protocol Television. Instead of a channel reaching your TV through a satellite dish, an aerial or a cable line, it's delivered as data over a regular internet connection — the same kind of connection you use to browse the web or stream video elsewhere.

How IPTV actually works

A live TV channel is captured and encoded into a video stream, then made available on a server. Your IPTV player app connects to that server over the internet, requests the channel you select, and decodes the incoming stream in real time — which is why a stable connection matters more for IPTV than it does for, say, loading a web page.

Practically, this happens through a playlist or login your app uses to know which server to connect to and which channels are available. That's usually either an M3U playlist URL or an Xtream Codes username, password and server address — two different technical formats for the same underlying idea.

IPTV vs traditional TV vs streaming apps

• Traditional TV (cable, satellite, terrestrial) delivers channels over a dedicated broadcast signal, independent of your internet connection
• IPTV delivers the same kind of live, linear channels — but over the internet instead of a broadcast signal
• On-demand streaming apps (the Netflix-style catalog model) are a different thing again: a fixed library you browse, not live linear channels, though many IPTV subscriptions also bundle a video-on-demand library alongside live TV
