IPTV on Kodi: Setup and Configuration
Kodi is a free, open-source media center that runs on almost anything, and it can play live IPTV channels through a PVR (personal video recorder) add-on that reads your M3U playlist — no separate IPTV app required if you're already using Kodi.
What you need
- Kodi installed on your device
- Your FREEGOIPTV4K M3U playlist URL or Xtream Codes login details
- An EPG (XMLTV) URL, if your subscription provides one separately, for the program guide
Installation steps
- Open Kodi and go to Add-ons → Add-on browser
- Find and install 'PVR IPTV Simple Client', Kodi's own built-in add-on for IPTV playlists
- Open the add-on's configuration and enter your M3U playlist URL under the 'General' tab
- Switch to the 'EPG Settings' tab and enter your EPG/XMLTV URL, if you have one
- Enable the PVR add-on from Kodi's settings if it isn't already active, then restart Kodi
- Open the TV section from Kodi's main menu to browse and watch your live channels
Adding EPG data in Kodi
The program guide in Kodi comes from a separate XMLTV-format feed, entered in the PVR IPTV Simple Client's EPG settings tab. Without it, your channels will still play, but Kodi's guide view will be empty or show only generic placeholders.
Which devices can run Kodi
Kodi is genuinely cross-platform, so the same setup steps work once Kodi itself is installed, regardless of which device you're on.
- Windows and macOS — install Kodi like any other desktop app
- Linux — available through most distributions' package managers or as a Flatpak
- Android and Android TV — install directly from the Google Play Store
- Fire TV Stick — install via sideloading, since Kodi isn't in the Amazon Appstore
Troubleshooting
PVR add-on won't connect
Re-check your M3U URL character by character for typos or an extra space, and confirm your subscription is still active before assuming the add-on itself is at fault.
Channels load but there's no program guide
Add your EPG/XMLTV URL in the PVR IPTV Simple Client's EPG settings tab — this is a separate field from the M3U playlist URL and is easy to miss on first setup.
Playback stutters in Kodi
Enable hardware acceleration in Kodi's player settings (Settings → Player → Videos), which noticeably reduces stutter on lower-powered devices.
